For our guests

The Anand Karaj

What to expect at the Sikh ceremony

The Anand Karaj ("Blissful Union") takes place in a Gurdwara. It is a warm, joyful and welcoming ceremony — here are a few gentle notes so you feel right at home:

  • Cover your head. Everyone keeps their head covered inside the hall — bring a scarf or dupatta, or use a head covering provided at the door.
  • Shoes off. Shoes are removed before entering; there is a designated area to leave them.
  • Seating on the floor. Guests sit on the carpeted floor; chairs are available for anyone who needs them.
  • Dress modestly. Shoulders and legs covered — festive Indian or modest formal wear is perfect.
  • Bowing is welcome, never required. Many bow toward the Guru Granth Sahib on entering; for guests of other faiths a quiet, respectful nod or simply sitting is perfectly fine.
  • Langar. The ceremony is followed by langar, a free vegetarian meal served warmly to everyone, seated together as equals.
  • Please note there is no alcohol or tobacco on Gurdwara premises.

The heart of the ceremony

The Four Laavan

An Anand Karaj has no spoken vows. Instead, the marriage is sealed through the Laavan — four wedding hymns sung by the raagis. After each hymn, Varun and Jasmine walk slowly and clockwise around the Guru Granth Sahib, the Sikh holy scripture, with the Guru as their witness. Varun leads and Jasmine follows, the two joined by the palla — a length of scarf passed from the groom to the bride — so they circle as one. Each round, or laav, marks a step in the journey they begin together.

  1. A foundation of faith

The first round is a vow to build married life on righteous living and on remembrance of the Divine — the ground everything else stands upon.

  2. Growing in love

The second deepens that bond into love and wonder, as the ego dissolves and the couple draws nearer to the Divine and to one another.

  3. Detachment and devotion

The third fills the heart with divine love, nurtured in the company of the holy — a love that rises above the everyday.

  4. Harmony and union

In the fourth and final round, harmony is reached: two souls settle into peace and blend, as the Sikh phrase goes, into “one light in two bodies.”

You are warmly invited to simply sit, listen, and share in the calm. No prior knowledge is needed — being here with us is the whole gift.

FAQ

What should I wear?

Festive Indian attire is warmly encouraged at every event. See our Dress Code & Colours guide for the vibe and a colour cue per day. Please avoid white or ivory at the wedding events, and dress modestly (head covered) for the Anand Karaj.

Are children welcome?

We're finalising the details and will confirm here soon. If you have questions about bringing little ones in the meantime, please give us a call or text.

What happens at a Sikh wedding (Anand Karaj)?

The ceremony takes place in a Gurdwara — heads covered, shoes off, modest dress, seated on the floor, followed by langar (a shared meal). Full details are in The Anand Karaj section above.

Can I take photos during the ceremony?

Personal photos are welcome at most of our celebrations. During the Anand Karaj, we kindly ask you to be discreet and to follow any guidance from the Gurdwara and our photographer, so everyone can stay present in the moment.

Is there a gift registry, and how much shagun is customary?

Your presence is truly the gift — please don't feel any obligation. Should you wish to give, cash shagun in a card is the lovely tradition, offered with both hands. Many choose an amount ending in 1 (for example $101 or $251), where the extra dollar carries a wish of never-ending good fortune; the amount is always personal and entirely up to you. Any registry, honeymoon-fund or e‑transfer details will appear under Gifts & Registry.

By when should I RSVP?
